RunCam 3S Overview and Comparison with RunCam 3

Posted by UpInTheSky on August 21, 2018 · 7 mins read

RunCam 3 series of HD action cameras has been designed with the main purpose of recording FPV Quads Racing/Freestyle footage.
RunCam 3S is the successor of the famous RunCam 3 which has been discontinued in May 2017.

Comparison

It is a good idea to start by comparing RunCam 3S specifications with the ones of its predecessor.
The image below shows how the two cameras have a really similar look, with RunCam 3S having sharp edges:

RunCam 3S vs RunCam 3 Camera Specs Comparison

In this table it is reported a comparison between the specs:

Feature RunCam 3 RunCam 3S
Angle of Field FOV 155° FOV 160°
Video Resolution 1080p@60fps / 1080p@30fps / 720p@60fps 1080p@60fps / 1080p@50fps / 1080p@30fps / 720p@60fps
Video File Format MOV MOV
Image Resolution 2MP 2MP
AV Output Format NTSC/PAL NTSC/PAL
Communication Interface Micro USB Micro USB
MicroSD card supported 64G max 64G max
Dimension 38*38*37.5mm 40*38*37mm
Battery Capacity 960mA 850mA
USB Power Input DC 5-17V DC 5-15V
Power Consumption 650mAh @5V 620mA @5V
Net Weight 66g 69g

As we can see there are not so many differences in the specs apart from 5 more degrees in the FOV, an added video resolution of 1080p@50fps and slight changes in dimension, weight, power input and consumption.

Improvements Overview

However, a big improvement has been done with the battery: finally, in the RunCam 3S it is removable. In fact, a big problem with RunCam 3 was the difficulty to replace the batteries (two 1s LiPo, each one with a capacity of 480 mAh): they were integrated inside the case and the only way to change them was to open it by removing the front glass and using a replacement kit (not so straightforward as it should be).

Now if you need to replace the battery, it is just a matter of buying a new one, insert it and you are good to go. Furthermore you can bring more batteries with you, avoiding the problem of finding yourself without the capability to record your flights. Both battery and SD card are stored behind a removable cover.
It has been added battery status light to keep track of the charging status (in RunCam 3 the status of the battery was indicated at start up by a blinking light on the power button).

In RunCam 3S Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) has been improved with respect to its predecessor and performs pretty well ensuring a good quality image definition when facing directly into the sun. This is a crucial feature for FPV flying, making a big difference if in the same frame there are bright and dark spots.

Like the previous version, RunCam 3S is equipped with two microphones: one on the front and the other on the back (RunCam 3 had a top mic instead of the front one):

They are not the strong point of this camera, even if they are better than the ones coming with the RunCam 3; they can be improved for sure. However, if we are using it for FPV racing/freestyle, audio quality should not be our main concern.

Mobile App

Since there is no integrated display on the back of the RunCam 3S camera, to control camera settings we need to use the mobile app:

RunCam 3S Mobile App

So, through a Wi-Fi connection protected by password, it is possible to change the following RunCam 3S settings:

  • White balance (Auto, Sunny, Cloudy, Fluorescent light, Incandescent light);
  • Exposure value (from -2 to 2 with intervals of 0.2);
  • Field Of View (Wide, Medium, Narrow);
  • Metering mode (Average metering, Center-weighted average metering, Spot metering);
  • Flip Screen (Off, On, Automatic);
  • Changing Mode (Burst mode, Time-lapse Photo, photo, Video, Time-lapse Video).

For video recording it is also possible to change, other than the resolution, the bit rate (expressed in Mbps) and you can send commands to take pictures or record videos directly from the app.
WDR can be enabled by the Setting screen (beware that recording at 1080p@60fps with WDR active will be resource heavy resulting in more battery consumption).

Moreover, through the app you can upgrade the firmware of the RunCam 3S in case the vendor releases updates.

Conclusions

RunCam 3S is a really good action camera and it is specifically designed to record videos mounting it on 5” - 6” quads due to its weight and dimensions. It represents a nice alternative to other more expensive action cams on the market and the improvements from its predecessor, especially the one regarding the battery, make it a competitive product.

A new version is available and it is capable of recording with a max resolution of 4K@30FPS: RunCam 5.
