As discussed in this article, Eachine VR006 Mini FPV Goggles lack of an important feature, Diversity Reception. This is why in this blog post we are going to see how to install a diversity receiver module, in particular the Eachine Pro58, which is cheap and is a real game changer.
Flashing Pirx The Pilot Firmware on Eachine Pro58
Before proceeding with the mod, I have chosen to load Pirx The Pilot firmware on the Eachine Pro58, which is a free good alternative to the default Eachine firmware because it adds a series of useful features (read this article if you want to know how to load Pirx The Pilot firmware on the Eachine Pro58 Diversity Receiver).
Disassembling
Like done for the Eachine VR006 ProDVR Mod, since we are going to solder wire leads on the pads located on the board inside the goggles, we need to disassemble them. To do this, we need to cut the black sponge in two points, the ones in which the bottom part of the goggles links up to the top part:
Once the cutting job is done, we can proceed with the separation of the two parts by removing the four screws located inside the highlighted holes in this picture:
Before we can pull off the board we have to remove the two RP-SMA antenna connectors:
Once that is done we can unplug the battery connector and gently pull out the board for the soldering job.
Soldering
The soldering job is pretty easy: we need only three wires and we can use the ones given with the Eachine Pro58, being careful to cut off the connectors only on one end, i.e. the side we are going to solder on the board. The other end connector is needed to plug into the diversity receiver module.
The three wires are used as reported below:
This is the result after soldering the wires to the board (remember to tin pads and wires for an easy soldering job):
The other wires shown in the picture are from the DVR mod.
Soldering the wires in this way gives us the possibility to maintain the original single receiver functionality; if we want to switch to the Pro58 instead, we have to activate the AV IN input from goggles MENU: in this way, goggles switch to the video signal received from the diversity receiver.
Reassembling
Now, it is just a matter of reassembling the goggles and making a hole for taking out the wires (we are going to mount the Eachine Pro58 on the outside):
Here is how soldered wires need to be connected to Eachine Pro58 pins:
The Eachine Pro58 comes with double sided tape, that can be used to fix the module on the left side of the VR006. Be careful to connect the wires as reported in the image below (we need to bend the pins by 90 degrees to place the receiver module flat on the surface):
The display reports the current frequency on which the receiver is tuned on and the reception quality of the two receivers. It also cycles informations like CPU usage, temperature and input voltage (it also have a funny customizable screen saver).
Be careful to follow the calibration process when you start for the first time the diversity receiver module with Pirx The Pilot firmware (just follow the instructions prompted on the screen).
If the Eachine VR006 have already the DVR mod, remember to disconnect the AV IN connector from the ProDVR when you want to use the diversity module: this is because we have connected the Eachine Pro58 diversity receiver module in order to use AV IN to display the received signal on the screen:
Now we have both DVR and Diversity, which is a big improvement. Note that, due to the higher power consumption caused by these mods, I have decided to change the internal battery, that is 3.7V 500mAh, with one that has a capacity of 2000mAh (same voltage of course).
Conclusions
In this article we have seen how to mod the Eachine VR006 Mini FPV Goggles in order to add Eachine Pro58 Diversity Receiver module. This improvement increases a lot the reception quality of the goggles making them a really nice alternative to the expensive goggles on the market.
Eachine Pro58 Diversity Receiver module can be found here at a very good price.
